    ◆ Revelations

From Rookie to Major League of My Own Life

It’s almost like my nervous system suddenly went: Oh. I know this terrain. I know myself. I don’t have to audition for my own existence.

Something shifted in me this morning.

    Not knowledge.

    Not memory.

Not revelation in the conventional sense.

    Expansion.

For a moment, my existence no longer felt contained by the boundaries of this body, this age, this biography.

    I did not feel older.

    I felt longer.

    There is an important difference.

    Older speaks of years accumulated.

    Longer speaks of continuity.

And with that sensation came something I did not expect: confidence.

Not the manufactured confidence of positive thinking. Not bravado. Not the courage required to overcome fear.

There was simply no fear there to overcome.

    No hesitation.

    No second-guessing.

No internal negotiation about whether I was too much, too direct, too affectionate, too strange, too visible.

    I was simply myself.

    Completely.

And perhaps that is what startled me most.

I suddenly felt extraordinarily well-seasoned in the business of being me.

As though I had spent my entire life believing I was a rookie, carefully learning the rules, studying the field, wondering whether I was playing correctly—

only to look down and realise I was already standing in the major leagues.

Not because I had mastered life.

    I haven't.

Not because I suddenly possessed answers unavailable to everyone else.

    I don't.

But because something in my relationship with myself changed.

I stopped experiencing myself as someone who needed permission to occupy her own existence.

There is a peculiar freedom in that.

I can say, I missed you, because I did.

I can say, I need my daily dose of you, because that is precisely what I felt.

I can love without immediately interrogating the love.

    Speak without rehearsing the sentence.

Stand inside my own presence without apologising for its size.

Maybe this is what becoming fully yourself feels like.

    Not constructing a stronger identity.

    Not becoming somebody new.

But discovering that the self you thought you were building has been standing there all along—

far more established than you realised.

And suddenly, you stop playing your life like you're hoping to make the team.

You realise it was your field.

    Your game.

    Your life.

And you walk onto it accordingly.

    One question awaits you.
