The Dull Ache That Lives in a Competent Spirit
The longing to be fully met
Inscribed August 24, 2026
There is a particular kind of ache that lives quietly inside competent people.
Not the kind that stops them.
Not the kind that dismantles their lives.
Not even the kind that anyone around them would necessarily notice.
It is dull.
Persistent.
Manageable.
And perhaps that is precisely why it can live there for so long.
Competent people continue.
They work.
They build.
They solve.
They carry responsibility.
They make decisions.
They recover quickly enough that most people never see the cost.
They are not waiting for rescue.
They are not incapable of standing alone.
In fact, they may stand so well that everyone assumes standing alone must be easy for them.
And most days, perhaps it is.
But then there are moments.
Usually quiet ones.
A walk.
An empty room.
The end of a long day.
A conversation that almost reached somewhere deep enough.
A person who came close enough to remind you of what being met might feel like.
And suddenly the ache rises.
Not the ache to be admired.
Admiration is easy.
Not the ache to be desired.
Desire can find you without knowing you at all.
Not even merely the ache to be loved.
Because people can love you and still never truly meet you.
The ache is more precise than that.
It is the ache for someone to stand before you with equal presence.
Toe to toe.
Mind to mind.
Spirit to spirit.
Not beneath you.
Not above you.
Not watching from the edge.
There.
Fully there.
Someone who does not require you to become quieter so they can remain comfortable.
Someone who does not mistake your capability for the absence of need.
Someone who brings enough of themselves that you are no longer generating the entire current alone.
And perhaps this is one of the strange burdens of competence.
You thrive regardless.
The ache does not prevent you from becoming.
It does not stop the work.
It does not erase gratitude.
It does not make your life empty.
You can be deeply fulfilled and still carry it.
That is what makes it difficult to explain.
Nothing is necessarily wrong.
And yet something remains unmet.
So you carry it quietly.
Most people never know.
There is no visible collapse.
No dramatic evidence.
Nothing demanding intervention.
Just a small internal weight that occasionally becomes impossible not to notice.
And in those moments, a question rises with it:
Am I meant to carry this forever?
There may be no answer available yet.
Perhaps some aches are removed.
Perhaps some are answered through another person.
Perhaps some remain long enough to teach us that being capable of carrying something does not mean we were designed to carry it alone.
And perhaps there are things in us that no human being will ever meet completely.
Only God knows the full architecture of what He placed inside a person.
Only He knows whether the ache is preparation, protection, longing, or simply one of those unnamed spaces that remain between what is and what has not yet arrived.
So the competent spirit continues.
Not pretending the ache is absent.
Not allowing it to become an identity.
Not shrinking in the hope that someone might finally reach them.
It continues.
It builds.
It loves.
It serves.
It becomes.
And somewhere beneath all that strength lives the quiet hope that one day, perhaps, someone will arrive who does not merely admire the fire from a distance.
Someone who brings fire of their own.
Until then, the ache remains.
Dull.
Quiet.
Almost invisible.
But felt.
Always.
And God knows.
One question awaits you.
