Today my heart is tender thinking of my father.
It is the first clearly observable sadness I have experienced since his death.
I have been documenting my experience, and today...
the twenty-first day.
Exactly three weeks later.
I feel a deep sorrow.
I am not trying to dismiss it.
I am trying to understand what I am feeling.
It comes in waves.
I feel it in my nervous system.
Almost as though something is quietly rattling through my bloodstream.
There are moments that feel like anger.
Moments that feel like irritation.
Moments that feel almost like disorientation.
What seemed to trigger it was going back to our last messages.
Something else has changed too.
I have begun noticing a silence in the noise of the day.
The world continues exactly as it did before.
Cars still pass.
People still laugh.
Conversations continue.
Life keeps moving.
Yet beneath all of it...
there is a quietness that wasn't there before.
Not because the world has become silent.
But because one voice no longer exists within it.
Perhaps this is another layer of grief.
Not the moment of loss.
But the gradual recognition of absence.
Today...
I think I met another layer.
Not with tears...
but with an open heart.
And tonight...
I discovered something else.
Grief office hours are certainly not nine to five.
Here I am.
Two o'clock in the morning.
Sitting with grief.
Feeling the heaviness of it.
The loneliness of it.
The strange stillness of it.
There is no architecture tonight.
No blueprint.
No inquiry.
No clever observation.
No carefully constructed words reaching for understanding.
Just me...
and grief...
wrapped around each other in the silence.
I always imagined grief would arrive like a storm.
Instead...
it comes like a quiet visitor who refuses to leave.
It asks nothing of me.
It simply sits beside me.
Perhaps this is what love looks like after it has nowhere left to go.
Not disappearing.
Not diminishing.
Only searching for somewhere to rest.
So tonight...
I will not analyse it.
I will not hurry it towards meaning.
I will simply let it be what it is.
A daughter...
awake at two in the morning...
missing her father.
